ANTIQUE DETROIT CITY HALL VICTORIAN NEWEL CAST IRON FENCE BALUSTER ARCHITECTURAL. This is a " Very Attractive Pair " of early 1871 hollow cast iron baluster fence spindles from the {1871 Detroit City Hall}. The building was located on Woodward Avenue in the heart of the city also facing Campus Martius.

Construction started in 1867 and completed in 1871, while the building actually took 10 years to complete it was demolished in 1961 and only took 34 days to destroy. Typical of what Detroit has been doing for years, tearing down the Best of the Best Classic buildings we once use to have with no actual justifiable cause.

When Detroit voted to tear down the 1871 City Hall that was " Literally A Sin " against the people of Detroit and against Magnificent Historic Architecture, because there was " Nothing Wrong " with the building. They torn it down to build an underground parking lot. It was the " Federal Wrecking Company " that demolished the building from a time frame of August 14th to September 18th, 1961. Early photographs and stereoview cards substantiate there originally was a very ornate cast iron fence around the building.

{See The Original Photo} in my posted images. As the city grew and space was a premium in the downtown area every inch of land was being used to build up the city. They expanded the land in front of the city hall by making a larger public park type setting which was the reason to remove the fencing. The original cast iron fence was removed only several years after it was installed. Postcards from 1905 - 1907 show the fence was no longer around the building.

{EARLY DETROIT HISTORY ON SALVAGE, PRESERVATION, REUSE AND WAREHOUSING}. I acquired this pair of balusters from a family who told me their uncle had worked with Federal Wrecking and they were found in the basement of the building during demolition. ITEM CONDITION : The pair of spindles are in " Exceptional Condition " for being 149 years old with absolutely no damage. There are no cracks, chips, flaking rust, only on the inside bottom as clearly seen in the pictures there is a rusty build up, which is expected.

They have a very noticeable Victorian influence in the over all design, floral leafs at the top, fluted column center steam. The very top inside has a cast iron strip which was used to screw on the finial as seen in the pictures posted. However because that piece is directly on the inside top lip, these would make fantastic table top " Lamp Bases ".

If you know how to work with metal this would be a very easy project. They still retain most of the original black paint and have areas where it is raw cast iron. The measurements are as follows - - 28 inches tall, the large center round section is 6 1/2 inches across, the square base is 5 3/4 inches by 5 3/4 inches, and is cast between 1/8th to 1/4 inch thick, the raised relief floral leafs at the top are 1/8th in depth, the very top open cup is 4 3/4 inches wide at the center, the opening on top is 2 inches. Over all these are very attractive and " Much Better In Person ". These are very nice old historic artifacts from Old Detroit.
